Welcome to my Web Site.

I was first elected as a County Councillor on 1 May 1989 and have served continuously since then.  I am very proud to represent Adderbury, Bloxham, Bodicote, Milcombe and Milton and to ensure that their needs are heard in County Hall. I am also very proud to represent the Conservative Party and I support its  leader, David Cameron and its values.

I believe in low taxes, real choice, value for money.  I led the County Council from 5 November 2001 until 15 May 2012.  During that time, I put Oxfordshire on the map locally, regionally and nationally. My political philosophy is based on belief in the market, less government, encouraging individual responsibility and ensuring that public services are run for the benefit of their users and not their providers.  I am proud to be politically incorrect.

On 5 November 2011 (the tenth anniversary of becoming Leader of the Council), I announced my intention to stand down at the Annual Meeting of the Council on 15 May 2012.  While Margaret Thatcher is my political hero in most respects, I have always had a sneaking admiration for Harold Wilson's sense of timing.  I think ten years in a job is enough - it is for me - and I know I have made the right decision to hand over the baton.

When I can find time to relax and that should be easier at least for a while, I enjoy good food and wine, playing the piano (badly) and reading avidly – particularly histories and biographies.  I am active in Freemasonry and a keen supporter of country sports.  I was proud to be marching for Liberty and Livelihood on 22 September 2002.

In HM the Queen’s 2007 Birthday Honours, I was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in recognition of services to local government.  The local media described me as "the most powerful politician in Oxfordshire after David Cameron"!  That mantle now lies for someone else to earn.

This site contains information about my involvement locally, in the county, regionally and nationally.
