Week Commencing 25 May  .....

Thursday 28 May 06:00 pm    We canvass Adderbury tonight, knocking on doors in Berry Hill Road, Horn Hill Road, Keytes Close, Milton Road, Norris Close, St Mary's Road, Tanners Lane and The Leys.  We find a real mixture of housing type, size and tenure.  A lot of people are welcoming, recognising me as their County Councillor and holding out the hand of welcome.

There are a few negative responses: a grumpy old disabled lady who tells me I failed to help her; a few people who link greedy MPs with local councillors in a totally different position - but, thankfully, only a few and a crusty old knight of the shires who disapproves of my support for a much needed community facility in exchange for a few greatly needed houses on the edge of the village.  You will never win them all .....

Off to the Red Lion with the team for a relaxing drink, having knocked on 181 doors!

Thursday 28 May 01:00 pm    I have a number of County Council meetings again today but the highlight is probably a sandwich luncheon with Kelvin Thomas, Chairman of Oxford United Football Club.  He is interested in developing his community involvement through the Oxfordshire Community Partnership and we have in interesting and constructive meeting.

Wednesday 27 May 06:00 pm    We have a strong team out tonight to canvass Bodicote.  We cover Church Street, Dillon Court, Freemans Road, Goose Lane, High Street, Malthouse Lane and Wards Crescent.

We finish in record time and with a good tally.  Onwards and upwards!

Wednesday 27 May 01:00 pm    I have a whole range of County Council meetings today but the most important one is almost certainly an update on Transform Oxford.  This is about getting bus stops out of Queen Street in Oxford City Centre to make the pedestrian experience better.  This scheme goes live soon and Cllr Ian Hudspeth (Cabinet Member for Transport) and I quiz and challenge the officer team's plans to destruction to ensure they will work well on D-Day.

Tuesday 26 May 06:15 pm    Back in time for the tail-end of Adderbury Parish Council where I sit in the public gallery as County Councillor but no longer a Parish Council member.

Tuesday 26 May 06:15 pm    It is off to the enemy heartland this evening - Liberal-infested Abingdon.  I go out with Mike and Marilyn Badcock and their canvass team, knocking on doors close to where they live.  I soon realise how well known and respected this political couple are.  They have made a huge mark on this community for their commitment to local issues and emergencies like the Abingdon floods.  To my mind this is what local government should be about - councillors in their local communities and serving them.

Tuesday 26 May 02:00 pm    We hold the last Cabinet of this Council.  All ten members are present and we despatch the business in little over an hour.  I take the opportunity at the end to pay tribute to the Chief Executive, Directors and officers who support the Cabinet's role and to my Cabinet colleagues who have worked tirelessly to make Oxfordshire County Council a high performing authority.  I also pay tribute to the other 64 elected members of all the Party Groups who are not in the Cabinet but who have nevertheless worked hard to represent the interests of their members.  Frequently and particularly recently, this has been in the teeth of an intrusive red top media that cares little about the huge gulf between the greed of national politicians and the fact that people who serve in local government inevitably end up considerably less well off than when they started.

Monday 25 May 11:45 am   I received an open letter from Cllr Lady Liz Brighouse, the Leader of the already rather small Labour Group on the County Council (7 at last count) and, I suspect, about to get even smaller (most bets are on it going down to 4).

Here is the link to her absolutely outrageous and over-the-top letter (Press the ه button to return) and here is the link to my reply. (Press the ه button to return)

Both of them have been released to the media.

Monday 25 May 10:00 am  It is Bank Holiday Monday and we catch up on some leafleting, covering Banbury Road, Butler Close, Chipperfield Park Road, Greens Garth, Lawrence Leys, Salmon Close and Schofields Way - about 130 houses.

Plenty of people about and all with a welcoming smile.  The rain just about holds off until we finish.
